Belize 78 from my book the Unnamed Soldiers.
In the middle of the tour, we got the chance to go on an Island survival course. Which meant being choppered out to an island called Ambergris Caye, and stayed in a town called San Pedro. We then spent 6 days basically trying to survive. San Pedro was an amazing place. I always swore I’d go back there, and anybody reading this book that has been there, would know why.
Fully equipped with everything we’d need to survive, “mainly beer” we set off following this native, who was going to show us what we could or couldn’t eat and how to fish and stuff.
We trekked a few miles down the coast and made camp. With San Pedro situated right on the barrier reef, there was an abundance of sea food, if you could catch it!! There was no need to worry though, the group before us had left lobster pots out all night and they were full of them. So we ate lobster, breakfast, dinner and tea.
After a few days, we started to look like and walk like f*****g lobsters, so we had a look around and noticed down from us there were a few dozen beach houses. We later found out they were owned by rich Americans, who came over a few times a year to chill, and the locals would look after them for them. It wasn’t long before we were inside one of these beach houses, and you know what they say while the cats a away!!! We lived like millionaires for the remaining few days. Well, why not? After all it was Island survival. Apart from a few bottles short from the drinks cabinet, they wouldn’t have known we’d been there.
