MAKE WAY 1984, from my book The Unnamed Soldiers.
HMS Nottingham’s Captain at the time, wanted 2 ceremonial buglers/drummers to join the ship for the Queens Commonwealth tour of the Caribbean.
Basically, the Nottingham and another ship, had been tasked to escort HMS Britannia on a jolly as the Navy would call it, a jolly was the nickname for a good time.
In the day time while the ship's company was working, I was ashore picking up MacDonald’s orders. I obviously added a bit on top for my troubles. I can remember one time we were in Nassau, Bahamas. The Nottingham was docked alongside the Britannia, the Queens ship. The main streets were packed with people waving their little flags and cheering, awaiting the Queen, as she was about to travel up the road in her open top car.
I had a more important mission to complete, how the hell was I going to get these 2 Adidas bags full of BIGMAC’s, back to the ship through this crowd, surely this was more important. I was lucky, I was dressed in my uniform looking important, suddenly someone in the crowd shouted hey man who are the Macdonald’s for, are they for the Queen? Yes, I said that was it, I had a clean run for the ship, the message passed from person to person, “make way MacDonald’s for the Queen, make way,” came the shout. I couldn’t believe it, it was like the parting of the red sea. If you want more stories, here's the link to the book.
