THE GREEN LINE CYPRUS 86 From my book “The Unnamed Soldiers”

I remember one awkward incident; I was travelling to Nicosia the capital, by UN land rover through the green line, 20 miles of no man’s land. Before we entered no man’s land, we had to give the Greek checkpoint guards our names, so they could inform the Turkish checkpoint guards on the other side of our names, but this was no ordinary UN land Rover with British soldiers in it. These were Australian Army UN Police, and this was a trip they made regularly, so they decided today they would have a bit of a laugh, well they were Aussies they were born to take the piss!

We got to the Greek check point and the Aussie Commander then turned round and said “watch this.” They asked the Commander our names, he said his name was Donald Duck, the guy next to him was Mickey Mouse, he pointed to me and told them I was Fred Flintstone and so on. I couldn’t believe it, this guy was actually writing those names down, then he lifted the barrier and off we went. We laughed all the way across the green line until we got to the Turkish checkpoint.

“Names,” this serious looking guard said. “Err I’m...” suddenly he couldn’t remember the names he gave them at the Greek checkpoint. He was now Daffy Duck and I was Barney Rubble, I said no you’ve got it wrong, I’m Fred Flintstone, you're Donald Duck. One of the coppers said shut up you Pommie twat, you’re confusing them. We started to argue who was who, in the end we, got it right, I thought we were in big trouble, but he just opened the barrier and let us through. I think we confused the hell out of the poor f*****r.
