WHO’S EATING SWEETS? Jungle patrols Belize 1978, From my book The Unnamed Soldiers
We were told we had to keep shaving and washing down to a minimum, but you had to clean your teeth though. I thought that was strange, but it makes sense when you think about it, walking round smelling like a bar of soap the enemy could smell you coming a mile away, plus you became the centre of attraction to most of the insects.
I remember one time I was on patrol, we were accompanied by 3 Special Forces guys, all of a sudden the one leading the patrol put up his hand, signalling us to stop. He turned round walked up to me sniffing the air, he then said “who’s eating sweets?” The next second his face was an inch away from mine, he then pointed to me and said “Strawberry flavour, spit it f*****g out.” How the hell did he know that!? I wonder if he still does that today? I bet there are no stealing sweets in his house. So yes, strange smells travel for miles in the jungle.
